Shaped Canvas
Excerpts from the catalogue text „Illusion and Depth” by Christa Wachenfeld
“Shaped Canvases” are freely designed forms in which inner structure defines the outside shape and vice versa. The wall becomes the actual background, enhancing the three dimensional effect. Developing spatial dimension out of the flat canvas by means of painting is the declared goal of the artist.
“Painting has always to do with space. The rectangular image always relates to the floor, the wall, the ceiling. It is something like a neutral window into an imaginary space, whereas the Shaped Canvas will not fit in so easily. It has to stand up quite differently in space. I see my paintings as flat, painted sculptures.” |
